interior design mediterranean rehabilitation residential valletta regeneration

This intervention re-establishes the architectural integrity of a Valletta townhouse whose original character had been eroded through successive alterations. The existing structure, stripped of its spatial hierarchy and material identity, was reconceived as a contemporary residence rooted in its historic fabric.

The design reinstates a proportion and rhythm consistent with the building’s typology, reintroducing traditional Maltese materials — locally cut stone, timber apertures, and patterned tiles — in dialogue with contemporary finishes and detailing. The spatial strategy retained the period framework while opening up key interior volumes to light and air, enhancing visual connections between floors.

The most significant transformation lies in the reinterpretation of the stairwell void, a latent spatial opportunity. This was adapted to accommodate a rooftop pool, its geometry integrated seamlessly into the building envelope. This singular gesture establishes a new vertical axis, linking the townhouse’s restored interiors to panoramic views over Valletta’s roofscape and harbour.

The result is a residence that reconciles historic typology with contemporary programme, reasserting the building’s place within the city while offering a refined home.
