The Forni Stores form part of the historical buildings within the Cruise Passenger Terminal waterfront, located in Valletta’s Grand Harbour. This project highlighted two critical aspects of heritage conservation: the necessity for ongoing, interdisciplinary studies to fully understand the distinct phases of a building and their influence on construction techniques and historical structures; and the importance of careful recording and documenting prior and during interventions to support significant restoration efforts. The project underlined the evolution of restoration theories and standards and their application on local heritage.

Our project for the re-purposing of the old Priory of Navarre was based on a design that sought to blend the building’s original austere identity as a convent, with the contrasting Baroque essence of the adjacent theatre to which it has, in time, been annexed. This difficult marriage was arranged while introducing new functions such as a booking office, exhibition spaces, and a café. Guided by reverence for the building's history, commitment to functional innovation, and an ambition to provide visually striking spaces, the intervention revitalizes the building and adapts it to allow the accommodation of contemporary uses, all the while creating a new originality and timelessness.

Villa Cantilena lies on the top of a hill in the quiet residential neighbourhood within Victoria Gardens. A playful yet sophisticated combination of materials – limestone, wood and concrete, balances the vernacular and the modern soul of the Villa, creating a subtle contrast between the voids and volumes, opacity and transparency, the organic and the man-made.

The Glasshouse is part of a wider strategy to revive and safeguard Villa Bologna’s heritage. This area of Maltese heritage which has been neglected in the post-war years, yet it is critical to maintaining a sustainable approach. The intervention focuses not only on the building itself but, most importantly, emphasizes heritage valorisation by addressing the architectural fabric. By viewing heritage as a valuable asset and propagating the native Maltese flora, Villa Bologna’s gardens are maintained, promoting the idea of circularity and sustainable development.

This penthouse in Sliema guards the spirits of the old dimora and its inhabitants while having been readapted to accommodate the owner's needs. A personal selection of objects and furniture from the old house and some new additions animate the soft yet distinct character of the flats.

The project brief intended to explore the potential of the site on which the Dragonara Casino lies whilst also proposing new uses that could be introduced to complement the current facilities.

The restoration of the HSBC contact centre in Swatar. The proposal integrates aspects of the HSBC Global Workspace Standards, with the local ones. The colour and materials palette used are related to vernacular architecture and elements of the island, allowing for the inception of a sense of local being as soon as entering the space.

The brief for the redevelopment and enhancement of an existing sports hall required to minimise the volumetric impact of the new build -accommodating the news sports club facilities- in relation to the surrounding landscape and pre-existing buildings.

AP Valletta completed the renovation of its historical building. AP has positioned itself as part of a creative cluster in Sappers Street Valletta. The idea of bringing together creative enterprises next to each other is to stimulate them as drivers for urban regeneration, innovation and branding. No. 4 Sappers Street is an opportunity to create a unique hub entirely dedicated to the cultivation of new ideas in Valletta. The creative cluster is designed to be fully integrated in its urban surrounding and historical context.

As global warming changes the climate of the region, the role of public space and agricultural infrastructure as shared commons and as spaces of exchange, will continue to grow in value. The challenging task of imagining one of the most complex German regions in 50 years from now, gave us the opportunity to work on major sustainability-related themes that should be central to any project, in Malta just as in continental Europe.

What follows is the story of the restoration of an 18th Century Palazzo located in the heart of Valletta that was severely damaged during World War II and that had lain in a state of disrepair for decades.

This is the story of a Palazzo in Valletta. Among its stunning ruins there are many hidden ‘treasures’, buried in dust and trash. Thanks to its new owners, the building will finally get the chance to rise from its own ashes.

The Coach House is a Grade 1 Scheduled Property located in the heart of the village of Balzan, within the Urban Conservation Area. Historically, the property is thought to have primarily served as a service building intrinsically connected to the adjacent Palazzo Bosio.

The brief aimed at the insertion of this 1930s hotel within the rehabilitation project for the area spanning between City Gate, the ex-bus terminus and Floriana ex-parade ground.

AP Valletta transform BOZAR’s upper galleries into a passageway of curiosities. Situated in the Belgian Centre for Fine Arts BOZAR, the exhibition ‘Malta: Land of Sea’ presents the country as an age-old crossroad and interprets the cultural landscape as a space of land and sea.

The Malta Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale is a complex installation that brings together the work of thirteen artists and a diverse selection of artifacts from national and private collections, in a non-hierarchical and a-chronological set up.

Villa Castro is located in the south-east of the town of Naxxar, in the centre of the island of Malta. Its location on the perimeter of an Urban Conservation Area has led to the drastic modification of the original setting of the villa, recent building developments destroying irreversibly its original context.

Tools, Trades and Traditions in the historical Palazzo de Piro (Mdina) is a unique museum in Malta presenting a single private collection of circa 2,000 objects and tools related to an array of trades.

Two adjacent townhouses within the old winding roads of the busy village of St. Julians merged into one.

The brief posed by the client was for the renovation of a third-floor apartment within a Grade II listed Victorian building, and its transformation into a high-end four-bedroom home in London.

This twenty storey high panoramic lift, commissioned by the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation plc and designed by AP, is located on the edge of Malta’s historic fortified capital city of Valletta.

The project provides an environment suited to the brewing of Farsons’ renowned products the whole building no more than a container for the brewing process, housing its plant and equipment, iconic brewing tuns, and all necessary stores, silos and fermentation vessels.

The brief for this project was to address the use of three existing offices within a historic building.

The brief was the renovation of a basement flat in west London. We were asked by our client to provide a high-end two-bedroom apartment consolidating the particular characteristics of the existing interiors yet providing new connections.

Conceived as a stone monolith rising out of the surrounding terrain, this summer pavilion provides pool-side facilities that have been re organized to encourage their use on a more regular basis by the family and to enhance their role when the gardens are geared for entertaining.

The outstanding views of the Grand Harbour, which penetrate every room of this prestigious old property on St. Barbara’s bastion, determined the neutral materiality and tones that are the basis of this rehabilitation project.

Villa Cagliares stands at the edge of the village of Zejtun in an area referred to locally as ‘ir-Rahal t’isfel’ which flanks the main water course.

Many of the tall buildings that characterize the urban fabric of Valletta have been left vacant and derelict for decades. The small dimensions of these habitations have made them for a long time undesirable.

A disused ground floor garage, excavated for a public lounge – a retrospection – a reinterpretation of the bold decor, of the sculptural qualities, the solids and voids, which characterise Balluta Buildings. 

Inspired by the original warehouse use of the 18th century baroque vaults at Pinto Stores on the Valletta Waterfront, the concept of Q-bar became the stacking of crates into sculptural tower-like volumes.

The project for the restoration of an historic building in the heart of the Siculo-Norman fortified hill-top city of Mdina, deals primarily with the refurbishment of the building to create a charming hotel with seventeen suites overlooking the Maltese landscape.

It is understandable that a large scale development like Tigné Point should contain the contradictions and complexities that arise when onerous commercial targets are married to a rich building tradition and the specificity of a historic site.

The insertion of a new Cruise Passenger Terminal at the foot of the baroque Pinto Stores, develops on the genus loci of Valletta, to add yet another layer to the rich historic stratification of the Grand Harbour.

The Malta Stock Exchange operates today from 19th century Garrison chapel, built at the time of the Crimean War as a school and place of worship for the allied troops passing through Malta on their way to battle.

Intervention for the re-qualification of Republic Street in Valletta.

Four residences clustered together to form a court at the heart of the development. The cue taken from the Mediterranean ‘ortus clausus’ was extended to the built fabric itself, which occupies the site in such a way, that the balance of solid and void, public and private, light and shade finds a natural equilibrium.

The underlining design ethos for this project was one which embodied both clarity and function simultaneously. The conversion from two relatively large apartments into one massive, ‘Zen-like’ living space had to be carried out with certain key targets in mind.

This small-scale renovation project of a Victorian warehouse space in East London started just after we concluded Stanhope Gardens across the city.

Palazzo Stiges, situated in the heart of Valletta, dates back to the first phase of the building of Valletta.

This villa is perched on the ridge of a hill that looks out towards the sea. It was designed to satisfy the clients’ yearning for space and freedom, to create the possibility of wandering through a succession of spaces that spring as though spontaneously from the lie of the land.

A new retail space for a leading Maltese company trading luxury fabrics and high-end furniture.

The project involved the construction of an office complex to house the offices of the Malta Maritime Authority and those of other maritime related entities.

This pavilion-like structure, that houses an extension to the existing kitchen in an 18th century house, is designed like an over-scale porch.

Restoration and re-use of historic buildings as a high quality touristic and residential development on the island of Gozo.

Built in the early 18th Century, Casa Perellos was the intimate, yet stately country residence of the Grand Master Ramon Perellos y Rocafull (1697 – 1720).

The balcony being an important architectural element in the streetscape of Valletta, it seemed ideal to reinterpret and recreate this external wooden element to contain the connection between the existing shop and its extension.

Ancient texts often describe the authors’ admiration for techniques used by builders and craftsmen, aimed at creating the perception of integrity through a carefully crafted joining of a multiplicity of parts.

The intervention on the tower is an insertion that is independent of the existing old structure thus avoiding any scars on the historic fabric.
